Elinor Barker of Britain has lapped the field with a brilliant solo effort late in the points race to secure gold at the track cycling world championships in Germany.

Barker's second lapping helped her to 50 points and a second discipline world title and fifth overall.

Appropriately enough the Cardiff-born 25-year-old enjoyed her success on St Davids' Day, the national day of Wales.

Jennifer Valente of the United States took silver on 34 points, one ahead of Norwegian Anita Yvonne Stenberg in bronze.

Australia's defending champion Alexandra Manly was never in contention while Dutch great Kirsten Wild, chasing a third gold in Berlin, finished sixth after crashing.
