Abbi Fede looms as the main contender for Saturday's Ceduna Foreshore Hotel Ceduna Cup, with an exciting race on the cards.
The weather forecast looks favourable which should produce a big crowd and while the main race will be hotly contested, nominations on Monday were low for some of the other races so hopefully a few more horses will be entered to bolster the fields.
The Calcutta takes place at the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel on Friday for all last-minute information, while on cup day the bookies, on course tote and Sky Racing will be available.
Selections were made before final fields, the barrier draw and jockeys were known.
Race 1: Ceduna Foreshore Hotel Ceduna Cup (1600 metres)
Since winning by six lengths at the Ceduna Christmas Races, Abbi Fede has performed well in three runs at Port Lincoln.
He stepped up to the 1750-metre mark last Sunday and finished well, so dropping back to 1600m will suit him.
Dance of Heroes was second in the Thevenard Cup and ran home nicely at Port Lincoln last start to complete four very good runs over the past month.
Relaxed also ran home well at his first start for new trainer Des Courtney and looking back at his New South Wales form, he is a good lightweight chance.
Two crowd favourites, It's Humphrey and Eye The World, also supplement a very good field.
Eye The World won the cup in 2019 but has been inconsistent of late, however he loves this track and can rise to the occasion, while It's Humphrey won the Thevenard Cup in convincing style and will be ripe for another tilt here.
I also give Gottabiton a good chance after winning over 1750m at Port Lincoln in November.
Tips: Abbi Fede, Dance of Heroes, Relaxed
Race 2: Toyota Australia Feature Sprint (1200m)
Only four horses nominated at the time of print and I am expecting more runners, so picking a winner is difficult.
Kailua always shows speed, but a doubt exists whether she can run the distance.
This time last year Knotted was winning three races in a row in Adelaide also won convincingly at Jamestown in October - of those nominated he has the best credentials.
Bottle and Bird will appreciate the small field and she ran a much improved race at Port Lincoln recently.
Tips: Knotted, Kailua, Bottle and Bird
Race 3: Letcher Moroney Chartered Accountants/Midsec Securities Sprint (1000m)
My Lesson came second at the Christmas meeting and could pinch this race if ridden just behind the leaders.
Maiden Grace shows plenty of speed and should be in front at the start, and possibly, the finish, while Party Tiger does not win out of turn yet this race is not strong and he could cause a surprise.
Tips: My Lesson, Maiden Grace, Party Tiger
Race 4: WCT Rural/Wilkinson Plumbing Trophy Race (1600m)
It could be a repeat of the Christmas meeting if Keep Digging and Saint Valentine meet again.
Only a cat's whisker separated them last month - with Keep Digging winning - and they look the main chances again.
Keep Digging has also been nominated for the Ceduna Cup, but Courtney could have his eye on this prize, while Saint Valentine likes this track and can turn the tables.
Turfonic has been a very consistent galloper and his first run at Port Lincoln was impressive, while Artful Teepa is still a maiden but will appreciate the distance.
Tips: Keep Digging, Saint Valentine, Turfonic
Race 5: Ceduna Home Timber and Hardware/Hahn Super Dry Trophy Race (1300m)
A few of these horses have also nominated for other races, so it is difficult to decide who will go where.
Serious Moonlight won easily here over 1000m in December and has not been disgraced at Port Lincoln in recent starts. The 1300m is a slight query, but she does have a strong finish.
Party Tiger is a good chance if he decides to nominate, while Celebrakti is a 10-year-old who has seen better days, but fought well last Sunday and could surprise.
Tips: Serious Moonlight, Party Tiger, Celebrakti
Race 6: TAB/West End Draught/Thevenard Shipping/SABOIS Maiden (1000m)
We might have more sponsors than runners at this stage and hopefully more horses will appear.
Subjugate is still learning, but battled well last start, while Ultimate View has run a placing at Gawler and is good enough to win here.
Tips: Subjugate, Ultimate View
