Make a splash on Family Fish Day by landing the biggest catch

The most anticipated family event on the Streaky Bay Tourism and Business Association calendar is Family Fish Day.

Last year was no exception with a whopping 187 registrations which was a significant increase on previous years.

It will be on again in 2020, with anglers aged 18 years and under set to rise early on Saturday, January 4 to register at 8am and cast off at 9am for two hours of vigorous competition until 11am.

Last year, Graham Redding, founder of the event and life member of the Streaky Bay Tourism and Business Association, was delighted not only by the record crowd but by the increase in species being caught.

Mr Redding stated, "We've been conducting this event for over two decades and the variance and increase in the species of fish is a great indication on the health of our bay."

The free family fun event offers cash prizes for the Anglers who land the largest fish off the jetty. The prize pool:

  • $100 for the heaviest scale fish caught
  • $50 for the heaviest scale fish runner-up
  • $10 for the heaviest fish caught for each category
  • $5 to anglers who catch 3 different species of fish

The event operates on a catch- release policy and the judges' decision is final.

No angler will go home empty-handed with on-the-spot fish tackle boxes being presented to several of the youngest entrants.

In addition, all registered anglers of 18 years and under receive a prize bag with fishing tackle paraphernalia.

A quality rod and reel will be awarded by Don Williams to the 'unluckiest angler'.

Donald and Janet Williams have generously supported the Family Fish Day over many years.

There will be a raffle with the lucky winner taking home a $50 gift voucher to redeem at the Streaky Bay Hotel Motel.

Tickets are $2 each or three for $5, so bring along some coins.

A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be available to purchase from 10am to ensure the anglers are sustained.

The competitors will be able to purchase bait at a bargain price, without having to leave the competition site, thanks to Killas.

After the competition, there will be a mini-coaching session on 'how to tie knots', while the competitors wait for the judges' decision.

Bring a rod, reel, fishing tackle, hat, sunscreen and winning attitude with you.

Make a day of it by packing a picnic lunch and enjoy time with family and friends on Streaky Bay's beautiful lawned foreshore.

Please note that extreme weather may postpone the event with 24 hours notice for:

  • A catastrophic fire danger rating (which is confirmed the day before) is issued or;
  • The forecast day prior is for 38 degrees or above (on ABC radio or television) and/or;
  • There are severe or extreme weather conditions predicted for the day of the event.

In these circumstances, a postponement notice would be posted on the Streaky Bay website www.streakybay.com.au

If the event is cancelled before or on January 4, then it is likely that the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, January 11.

Last year several families from interstate indicated that they had either travelled to participate or extended their stay in Streaky Bay for an additional day because of the event, and personally thanked the organisers for hosting such a well-organised family competition.
