A committee has been formed to help Elliston's Australian Salmon Fishing Championship stay strong.

The Elliston Community and Visitor Information Centre (ECVIC) held a meeting last month to discuss the future of the championships.

The championship usually runs for three months over winter as a way to keep people visiting the town but this year it only went for one.

ECVIC staff Julie Allchurch and Tracy Sampson said that resulted in a sharp drop in numbers at local businesses.

In a letter to the Elliston council they said those who attended the meeting wanted the championship to run for three months

"It would be a fair assumption to make that the issues we have had this season has helped to spur on more involvement within the town about the championship," they said.
