Cleve Area School student Sophie Nuske has been named a finalist in the SA Training Awards.

The 17-year-old is one of four across the state in line for the School-based Apprentice of the Year award.

Miss Nuske comes from a farming family in Sheringa and boards at the school for most of the week where she is involved in the ag course at Sims Farm.

For the past two years she has travelled home each week to undertake an apprenticeship with neighbours Jennifer and William Norsworthy as part of her Certificate 3 agriculture course.

Miss Nuske became interested in farming through helping her family wherever she could, with sheep farming her main passion.

"Doing sheep work was what got me into farming... that's what makes me get up out of bed every morning," she said.

She said she was encouraged to apply for the training award by the school.

"It's just a good opportunity to experience new things," she said.

After her application, she went through an interview process where she was asked about her future plans and her ideas for the future of farming.

Miss Nuske said she was "privileged and honoured" to have been one of four to be shortlisted for the award, and said applying for the award was part of putting her name out there and making it clear she was willing to work.

Miss Nuske is currently in her final year of schooling, and is considering further study.

She said she was looking at options including studying animal science and doing a traineeship with Elders after graduation.

In the future, Miss Nuske plans to find work with a livestock adviser or wool broker to gain more experience, before eventually returning to the family farm.

The awards will be presented at a dinner in Adelaide on September 6.
