Football back in full swing with mixed results so far

It has been a big start to the year across EP with local football now in full swing, and with seeding coming to a close, (great to see good general rain across the area recently), local footy and netball will be back at the forefront of our weekends.

We have seen some mixed results and ladder leaders Western United, West Coast Hawks, Kimba Districts and United Yeelanna are undefeated but I am sure the post Mortlock challenges will come thick and fast.

Law changes introduced this year have been implemented by all Eyre Peninsula leagues and feedback in general has been positive, with clubs and leagues to be commended on how they have managed and implemented the changes.

It has also been pleasing to see the positive uptake and management of the AFL coaching accreditation with all clubs being proactive in this space to put our leagues, clubs, and most importantly coaches, in a strong position.

Recently we celebrated National Volunteer Week. It was an excellent opportunity to recognise the hundreds of volunteers across the region in football and netball, and just as importantly our local communities. Volunteers are an integral part of any organisation, not an add-on service, and without them clubs simply would not survive.

We have an exciting time ahead. In July we have the much anticipated Kinlough Cup and Pedler Cup to be hosted by United Yeelanna and played at Karkoo Oval.

Following that, the state championships will be in Port Pirie on July 13 and 14 with EP looking to field another strong side and defend their title under the guidance of coach and EP legend Scotty Feltus.

I would like to acknowledge the EP Football and Netball Council that, under the guidance of chairperson Tony Irvine, is working extremely hard behind the scenes with all EP leagues and clubs to help promote EP football and netball, and ensure a strong and sustainable future.

The council is made up of committed volunteers, and along with support from SANFL community footy and the Norwood Football Club, hold a strong desire to ensure the future of local sport and communities on the EP is sound and strong for many years to come.

See you at the local footy.
