Far West would have gained some confidence going into this year's Mortlock Shield carnival after scoring a 21-point win against Eastern Eyre in the A grade interassociation match at the Far West Aboriginal Sporting Complex on Saturday.
It was close match throughout with Jarden Stoetzer getting the home side's first goal before Eastern Eyre would kick the next three majors, two of which coming from Joel Fitzgerald.
One more goal coming from reliable forward Jarrad Trowbridge kept the margin to five points at quarter time.
The match shaped up to be a low scoring affair with lots of defensive pressure, but Far West found majors through Stoetzer and Tom Woods before Fitzgerald bagged his third to keep the margin to one point, Far West's way at half time.
Far West applied more defensive pressure in the third quarter, keeping Eastern Eyre to just two behinds for the whole quarter.
However opportunities in front of goal went begging for the home side as it only managed to convert two goals from six scoring opportunities, including a third for Stoetzer.
While they missed out on extending their lead out to a dominant margin, Far West had a handy 15-point lead going into the final break.
Scoring shots were not as frequent in the final quarter as the two teams fought hard to the finish.
Fitzgerald nailed his fourth goal while Stoetzer got two more to finish the day with an impressive five-goal haul.
Far West running out winners 8.8 (56) to Eastern Eyre 5.5 (35).
Dom Denton was named best player for Far West while Zane Wykamp was best for Eastern Eyre.
Far West also had a very good win in the under 17 game, defeating Eastern Eyre by 25 points.
The home team led in scoring shots five to two in the first quarter but Eastern Eyre scored the only major for the quarter.
Accuracy was still an issue in the second but Far West managed to score three goals from seven scoring shots to lead by 14 points at half time.
As seen throughout the game Far West dominated scoring shots but accuracy kept them from a higher winning margin, converting three goals from eight second half scoring opportunities.
Eastern Eyre were kept to two goals for the whole second half as Far West ran out winners 6.14 (50) to 4.1 (25).
Best for Far West was Harlee Chandler while Jake Turner was best for Eastern Eyre.
The visitors managed one win for the day, Eastern Eyre's under 15 side defeated Far West by 14-points in a well contested game.
Eastern Eyre led throughout but Far West kept it to one kick difference at half time before a two goal to one third term ultimately set up Eastern Eyre for the win, 5.7 (37) to 3.5 (23).
Oakley Price was best on ground for Eastern Eyre and Gareth Dudley Jnr was named Far West's best player.
