Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula’s Marine Parks Program, in conjunction with Inspiring South Australia, are hosting snorkel tours along the coast this month – including near Streaky Bay.

The tours, along with marine discovery displays, are part of the Department for Environment and Water’s state-wide Immerse Yourself program.

The Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries snorkel tours will take place at the Tumby Bay Jetty on Monday, January 14 and Tuesday, January 15, at Shelly Beach in Port Lincoln on Wednesday, January 16, at the Mount Dutton Jetty on Saturday, January 19 and at Smooth Pool near Streaky Bay on Sunday, January 20.

There will be two sessions at Smooth Pool, at 11am and then at 1pm.

Marine Parks regional coordinator Dr Shelley Paull said the aim of the program was to learn more about South Australia’s unique coastal and marine environments.

“Eyre Peninsula is home to 10 of the state’s 19 marine parks, with arguably some of the most spectacular coastline and unique marine environments in Australia,” she said.

“We also have a rich Aboriginal history with deep connections to Country, including Sea Country, and I am really looking forward to showcasing this in January.”

The Immerse Yourself program also includes the Barngarla Aboriginal Sea Country workshop Yamara Wardana (Embrace the Sea) at the Port Lincoln Library on January 25.

“This event will include a brief insight into the extensive language, art and connection Barngarla people have with their traditional lands and seas, and I’m anticipating this free event will be very popular,” Dr Paull said.

The Immerse Yourself program concludes with the ‘Secrets of the sea’ display, accessible weekdays throughout January at the Streaky Bay Visitor Information Centre.
