The Port Neill Bowling Club hosted this year’s men’s inter-association match which was taken out by Southern Eyre.
The weather was perfect and the green presented in an excellent condition, which enabled a high standard of bowls action.
Forty-eight players from Western Eyre, Eastern Eyre and Southern Eyre associations played two matches of 21 ends to determine the most successful association on the day.
Southern Eyre claimed the honours, followed by Western Eyre and a further gap back to the host association Eastern Eyre.
In previous years, each association chose 24 players and two playing or non-playing selectors, however for this year it was decided to have only 16 players and one non-playing selector be represented.
Following the matches, a squad was selected to represent Eyre Peninsula at an inter-region tournament against Yorke Peninsula, Upper North and Lower North at Port Augusta next month.
Selected in the squad, which was divided into six teams of four, were: captain Mark Wrigley, Leon Smart, Ross Borlace and Colin Brown; captain Gerardo Perone, Geoff Lehmann, Nigel Griffin and Joe Perone; captain Ashlin Cock, Kym Shepherd, Trystan Zippel and Peter Cock; captain Gary Schreiber, Ashley Joyce, John Rumbelow and Paul Philips; captain Trevor Smith, Gavin Sincock, Gus Giles and Bill Richardson; captain Craig Ferguson, Des Bourke, Noel Millard and Nigel Oswald; with Les Hammence, Paul Hollitt and Steven Edwards as reserves.
Region 5’s event manager Darryl Hodge, from the Kirton Point Club, thanked the Port Neill Bowling Club for its preparation and catering for the day.
He also wished all players good luck at Port Augusta.
From Port Augusta, a squad of 20 will be chosen to represent Eyre Peninsula in a statewide regional competition in Adelaide next April.
Of those 20, nine will then be selected for a tournament pitting country and metropolitan teams against each other.
