The project to honour champion jockey Kerrin McEvoy with a bronze statue is moving ahead with the creation of a sub-committee of the Streaky Bay Racing Club.
The Streaky Bay community has been a driving force behind the Kerrin McEvoy Sculpture Project, in dedication of the two-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey.
Members of the community with an interest in honouring his achievements have formed the sub-committee for the purpose of raising funds and erecting a life-size bronze statue, to be placed proudly on the Streaky Bay foreshore in celebration of his racing achievements.
The statue is estimated to cost about $120,000.
The bronze statue will be a life-size sculpture of Mr McEvoy with his saddle and riding gear, and will be created by renowned bronze artist Ken Martin, who created Port Lincoln’s Makybe Diva statue and other statues at Adelaide Oval.
Mr McEvoy recently met with Mr Martin in Adelaide for an initial photo shoot that will be the basis for the statue, and the committee was pleased with the imagery they were shown.
Committee chairperson Geoff Hull said this was an exciting project for Streaky Bay.
“I am pleased with the enthusiasm of the local community to date, and thank those interested who have come on board the committee to help us achieve this,” he said.
The committee has established a project with the Australian Sports Foundation, where people can make tax deductible donations.
In addition to donations, the committee said they hoped to access grants and were seeking additional support through sponsorship to cover the cost.
The committee is hoping to have the project funded over the next two years, and upon reaching a target funding amount Mr Martin would be commissioned to commence with the sculpture.
The committee is calling upon anybody who would like to get behind the project to help make it become a reality, to honour one of the region’s sporting greats.
