What a great Oysterfest we have just had

Many have commented on how good Oysterfest was, and some have described it as the best event yet.

Personally, I totally agree with this.

We had the pleasure of a visit by Prince Francois Murat and his son Sebastien, and these descendants of the family who our closest bay was named after proved to be wonderful people.

They were very happy to see the many local places and things bearing their family name and were simply delightful.

It was also great to have the company of Rowan and Theresa Ramsey and Peter and Annette Treloar.

This visit was made possible through the kind and generous support of the Lang Foundation, through Roger and Jan Lang, who also proved to be very welcome visitors to Oysterfest, while members of the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum also most kindly contributed to facilitating the visit.

Most watched the AFL grand final at our home and sadly supported the winning team – much to my dismay.

One of the reasons that Oysterfest was so successful is the level of hard work and planning by members of the council staff.

It is something that we tend to take for granted at times, however we are truly fortunate to have a staff which so often goes many extra yards to make events proceed smoothly.

Finally, our local oyster industry deserves a very special mention for their ongoing support of this important event.

Without the continued dedication of industry members it would be extremely difficult to have an Oysterfest.

Considering the difficulties that this important industry is facing because of the POMS disease outbreak we are extremely grateful for this priceless community service.

The quality of the oysters this year was simply brilliant in both size and taste.

This is because the Zippel family held back enough oysters to cater for Oysterfest during a time where demand for oysters was at the highest ever level. The oysters could have been sold at any time, yet were held back specifically for this event.

On behalf of the council and the general community, I offer my sincere thanks to the community-minded Zippel family.
