Elliston have edged their way into the Mid West football grand final following a tense 17-point preliminary final triumph over Wirrulla at Elliston on Saturday.
The Roosters had their noses ahead throughout the contest to emerge with a 12-11 (83) to 10-6 (66) result and book a date with West Coast in the decider.
Tom Rumbelow and Glen Tonkin both put two goals away for the Roosters, while Simon Webb led the charge for Wirrulla with a quartet of goals.
Elliston had won the previous two meetings between the teams after Wirrulla triumphed in the first and there was not much to separate the teams heading into quarter-time after three goals apiece.
The Roosters enjoyed a little more breathing space as they turned their three-point advantage into nine by the main break by booting four goals to Wirrulla’s three in the second term.
The third quarter was a struggle.
Both teams could sense a place in the grand final was up for grabs and they could only manage a goal each as the margin extended slightly to 11 points.
Elliston finally managed to get the better of the Bombers in the final term with four goals to three to advance to the showpiece.
The Roosters will face West Coast at Wirrulla this Saturday.
The Hawks were successful when the teams met earlier in the finals series, however two of the four matches this season have ended in one-point margins – including West Coast’s only defeat of the season.
Elliston defeated West Coast by 42 points to advance to the B grade grand final.
The Roosters raced away in the opening two quarters to seal their spot in the decider with a 15-11 (101) to 8-11 (59) result.
Elliston got the jump early as they led by three goals at quarter-time and then breezed past the Hawks with five goals to two behinds in the second term.
That put the home team 48 points clear at half-time and in command of proceedings.
West Coast slightly reduced the deficit to 44 points with three goals to two in the third term yet Elliston were looking comfortable to end the victors.
The teams went goal-for-goal in the final quarter to see Elliston come away with the win by seven goals.
Brad Page with the chief destroyer in the Elliston forward line as he finished with six goals, while Oska Richards chipped in with three majors.
Nathan Johnson and Harmyn Baldock kicked two goals each for the Hawks.
The Roosters go on to meet Wirrulla in Saturday’s grand final.
A dominant third quarter helped Wirrulla get the better of Elliston by 26 points in the colts preliminary final.
The Bombers pulled clear after a tight first half to run out 8-8 (56) to 3-12 (30) winners.
Wirrulla kicked the only goal of the first quarter to lead by five points at the first break, while two goals apiece in the second term saw the margin sit at four by half-time.
Wirrulla made their move after the interval by slotting in four goals and they made Elliston pay for their inaccurate kicking to extend the lead to 20 points.
The Roosters could only manage one goal and four behinds, while in the fourth term they kicked just four behinds as Wirrulla sealed the match with a further major to win by four goals.
Hugh Hammat and Harley Olsen each kicked a pair of goals for the victorious Bombers, matched by Elliston’s Jordan Little.
The result means Wirrulla go on to meet West Coast in the grand final this Saturday.
