Meals on Wheels calls for more volunteers to join branches

The efforts of dedicated Meals on Wheels SA volunteers will be celebrated as part of National Meals on Wheels day on Wednesday.

More than 76,000 volunteers from across 600 organisations have been assisting local communities – including branches at Ceduna, Streaky Bay and Wudinna – for 65 years.

The Ceduna branch has 66 volunteers giving out about 10 meals a day and branch president Claire Collins said it was an important service.

Two volunteers go out each day, meaning everybody delivers meals once every five or six weeks.

“There are some clients who may be independent and do their shopping, but can’t cook a whole meal two or three times a day, or there are some clients who are very elderly and rely on this meal,” she said.

“We provide soup, a main course and a sweet and this is their main meal of the day.

“The hospital cooks the meals and packages them – it is a nutritious, balanced meal.”

She said Brenda Kaehne played a big part in the Ceduna branch’s operations on the administrative side, logging in the number of meals cooked and delivered, creating rosters and looking after the financial aspect.

Mrs Collins said Meals on Wheels was a good outlet for volunteering.

“It’s a lovely way of visiting clients, and it may be somebody you don’t always see, and it’s nice to go to their houses with a smile and to say hello,” she said.

“Clients always say they are happy to see the people when they visit.

“It’s a good thing to be involved with.”

Australian Meals on Wheels Association president, and chief executive officer of Meals on Wheels SA, Sharyn Broer said you got more than just a meal from Meals on Wheels.

“Our fantastic volunteers take the time to say hello and make sure you’re okay,” she said.

“A hearty meal warms the tummy, but a simple chat can warm the soul.”

She said they were appealing for more volunteers to join teams across the country.

“If you have a few hours to spare to deliver meals or lend a helping hand in our kitchens, and make a huge impact in your community, we would love to hear from you.

“And if you can’t donate your time, consider donating a few dollars to help keep our wheels turning.”
