Super league drafts three Eyre Peninsula bowlers

Streaky Bay’s Damon Edmunds will compete against other Eyre Peninsula bowlers following the draft for the South Australian Super League.

Bowls SA hosted its first ever draft which saw three lawn bowlers from Cummins and Port Neill drafted into squads.

Selecting from a pool of 207 hopeful draftees from clubs from across South Australia, the SA Super League added 48 talented players from across eight franchises from all areas of the state to the six already selected marquee players in each squad.

Pick 16 in the draft, Cummins’ Helen Minhard has played 18 Tests for South Australia and was back-to-back Country Carnival Singles Champion, receiving the Country Carnival player of the year in 2014-15 and will join Port Neill’s Kane Goldsworthy in the Central Chargers team.

Port Neill’s Jackie Field was a quarter-finalist at Australian indoor championships, quarter-finalist in the Australian open triples and will join the Western Rogues.

The original six teams of marquee players have been aligned to different regions, with the Heysen Comets looking after Eyre Peninsula and Eastern Adelaide.

Edmunds was joined by Cleve’s Ben Harris in the Heysen Comets squad, in addition to four players from Adelaide.

Four more drafted from Adelaide, plus one each from Hahndorf and Arthurton, finalised the squad.

The first round of the SA Super League will be on July 27, starting at 6pm and held at the Salisbury Bowling Club in Adelaide.
