Wirrulla celebrates 100 years of football

Past and present members of Wirrulla Football Club will celebrate a century of football in a pair of events planned this year.

The football club will host its first event on June 23 when it hosts West Coast Hawks in a centenary match with all three grades wearing a special centenary guernsey.

The guernsey will be red with a black and white V as well as a white star reflecting on Wirrulla’s past guernsey designs.

Club president Milton Holmes said the centenary was a significant milestone for a club based in a town the size of Wirrulla.

“Being such a small club making 100 years shows how we pull together as a club and show our determination and love for the game and our community,” he said.

“The thing that makes Wirrulla a great club is that the people have a passion for football and enjoy socialising.”

Mr Holmes said for Wirrulla to have also not amalgamated during its time showed the support behind the club and the community.

The centenary match will also involve an auction of some of the guernseys from the day, a display of historical photos and the naming of Wirrulla’s Team of the Century.

Former football club and Wirrulla Sports Club president Andrew Patterson said the club hoped to have most of the 2008 A grade premiership team in attendance as well as players from the early 1970s.

The club will also hold another centenary event on Mid West grand final day, which it will host this year.

The event will also coincide with the Wirrulla School 100 years celebration.

Mr Patterson said it would be really special if the club could win its first premiership in a decade at this year’s grand final.

“We’ve got a good group at the moment so we’re quietly confident.”
