Koonibba, Western United earn wins in Far West

Top two sides Western United and Koonibba have further strengthened their positions on the ladder with wins against Thevenard and Western United respectively at the weekend.

The match at Ceduna was a pivotal one with the two teams separated by percentage on two wins apiece.

The Blues started well with a four goal first quarter, including two from Tom Clayton to lead by 20 points at quarter time.

Koonibba went on the attack in the second quarter with Jesse Lennon kicking three of the Roosters’ six goals while the Blues were kept scoreless, the home side were trailing by 24 points at half time.

A tight third quarter saw the Blues bring it to Koonibba and get some important scores on the board, including another three goals from Clayton.

Two goals from the Roosters in the third kept the pressure on the Blues who were trailing by 14 points at the final break.

After one goal apiece Koonibba would charge home strong, kicking the last five goals of the game to run away to a strong victory 15.17 (107) to Blues 5.9 (59).

Lennon was Koonibba’s top scorer with four goals while Blues’ Clayton finished with the biggest goal haul of the day with five.

Thevenard had a good start against Western United at Penong with four goals to one in the first quarter to lead by 18-points at quarter time.

Western United took control of the game in the second quarter with 14 shots on goal however accuracy kept the Tigers to five majors, while defensive pressure kept Thevenard scoreless to set up a 21-point lead at half time.

Goals were hard to come by in the third quarter as both teams failed to score a major with defences applying pressure on forwards.

The two teams managed two behinds each to keep the margin at 21 points going into the final quarter.

Western United charged home strong in the final quarter with eight goals while their defences kept Thevenard from making any score, setting up the win 14.16 (100) to 4.4 (28).

Dale Shipard was the top scorer with four goals with his teammates Tyler Dunn and Jesse Chandler kicking two, meanwhile Dom Denton was Thevenard’s top scorer with two goals.

There is one more round of football before the Mortlock Shield break and it will see two important matchups.

There is a top two clash this weekend as Western United plays at Penong again, this time against the red hot Koonibba Roosters.

The Blues have another home game, this time at Smoky Bay, as they host Thevenard who are determined to get off the bottom of the ladder.

All four teams will want to have strong performances to set themselves up after the break.
