Streaky Bay's Whiting Carnival attracts more than 120

More than 120 bowlers converged on Streaky Bay to play in the very popular week long bowls carnival. Bowlers came from most parts of the state with a few from interstate clubs, namely Exmouth, Esperence and Hopetoun, Western Australia and Queanbeyn, ACT, to mention a few.

Sunday was the first day with a Mixed Fours competition. Winners for the day were Ugis Friednesfield, Kate Hassam, Graham Dickson and Sandra Desmond from Ascot Park on 82 points, closely followed by Brenton and Annette Speed (Victor Harbor), Terry and Thelma Bennett (Birchmore KI) 80 points. Third place were Gordon Stopp (Keith), Sue Rumbelow, Manny Van der Horst and Judy Cheer (Millicent) on 80 points.

Monday’s competition was a Mixed Pairs day with 60 bowlers competing. Winners were Lance Goddard and Nancy Warne on 87 points, with John Goddard and Di Watson coming a close second on 85 points and Malcolm and Dee Siegert (Port Lincoln) third on 84 points.

Tuesday’s Mixed Pairs competition saw Barry King and Rita Winn Tapscott take our first prize on 86 points, Graham and Jan Kenny were second place getters on 84 points with Terry and Thelma Bennett coming in third on 79 points.

Wednesday was a rest day where many bowlers got to have a day out fishing or visit the many coastal attraction our area has to offer.

Thursday’s competition was a Mixed Fours event, with a Lady Skipper. Winners were Annette and Brenton Speed and Terry and Thelma Bennett on 82 points, second were Jan and Darryl Bencke, Di Willliams and Peter Sheppard. Carol Thomas, John Goddard, Melva Freeman and Lance Goddard came in third with 79 points. The popular BBQ tea raised $1844.15 for the RFDS and a further $540 was raised from auctions with a total of $2389.15 being donated to the RFDS. Thanks to the Somerton Bowlers for putting on the barbecue tea.

Friday is the Ladies Fours competition with 80 players taking to the greens. Winners from the Cummins Club were Sandra Blacker, JA Fitzgerald, Karen Lynch and Helen Mickan with 86 points. Second on 83 points were Marie Matters, Janet Williams, Pam Woolford and Di Dalwood. Dee Siegert, Jan Kenny, Kerry Johnson and Josie Williams were third on 80 points.

Saturday’s Men’s Fours were played in cool conditions but that did not deter bowlers. Team Kenny, consisting of Chris Kenny, Chad Kirby, Dion Edmunds and Tom Johnson, who also came third, scored an 8. Winners were Chris Minhard, Ron Waller, Jim Fuss and Rod McDonald on 82 points, second Gary Wright, Brenton Miller, Jim Uzzel and Brian Ruicoch on 80. Fourth placing went to Dennis Richter, Mark Garrick, Brian Hoffrichter and Tristan Zippel.
