World record attempt at Polda Rock

We are putting a call out to all residents of the district and visitors to go along to Polda Rock on the evening of Wednesday May 23 at 7pm to take part in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record of the most people stargazing at 37 different locations across Australia.

The televised stargazing event is being nationally promoted and televised by the Australian Broadcasting Commission and in partnership with the Australian National University and hosted by Professor Brian Cox and Julie Zemiro.

The record was set in 2015 with 7960 people stargazing across 37 different locations.

People who want to participate will need to register, so the number of people for the world record attempt can be formally recorded.

For the world record to be verified, participants need to spend a 10-minute period stargazing.

Participants also need to have access to a telescope or a pair of binoculars.

The event is free for those with their own binoculars or telescope.

For those without a telescope, arrangements are being made to obtain one locally at a very low cost.

These details, along with how to register locally for this event will be made available over the next week, so keep an eye out.

Wudinna Business and Tourism, Wudinna Visitor Information Centre and interested people with the support of Wudinna District Council Economic Development Officer, Craig Midgley are meeting to start preparations for making this a fantastic event for the district.

Polda Rock was selected as a site that is away from township lights and accessible for stargazing.

We encourage all ages to become a star gazer for the evening and be part of an exciting record breaking attempt.

From the works department

With the continuing dry conditions, the start to the council’s annual patrol grading program has been delayed.

Where possible we have been making the most of suitable grading conditions to maintain road surface on priority roads.

Hopefully useful rainfall will not be too far away so we can attend to the remainder of the road network.
