Members of the Penong Primary School have been busy in the early part of the year holding fundraising events for the Relay for Life.
Under their chosen name of the Penong Pixar, the group first hosted a wine and cheese tasting afternoon at the Penong Hotel, which was extremely well supported with a cross-section of the community attending.
It included 12 different cheese-inspired canapes, which, in consultation with local publican Geoffrey Denton, were paired with a varied selection of wines to complement each tasting, with many patrons then enjoying a meal and a night out.
That was followed by an ‘op shop’ style evening at the Western United clubrooms earlier this month.
Clothes donated by community members were sorted into sizes and displayed, then the team chose a number of outfits to form a fashion parade to show off pieces available for sale.
The night began with team captain Hazel Nielsen welcoming everybody to the event and introducing the ‘models’ for the evening, while Tricia Shipard talked up the fashions and encouraged guests the cause.
There was a wide variety of clothes that ranged from everyday causal ware to classy night wear and those in attendance were encouraged to buy an outfit and team it with fascinators and hats on display for the Penong Races.
After some intensive buying and a bite to eat there were some interesting games to lighten the mood, then the night kicked on with music and dancing enjoyed by all in attendance.
The next fundraiser was the evening meal held after the Penong Races.
Mrs Shipard said the community support showed how close this cause was to many people and their generosity was greatly appreciated.
