Work will start this week on Ceduna District Council’s $9.6 million Marine Offloading Facility at Thevenard with the aim of completing it by the end of next year.

The project will see the construction of an unloading facility for commercial fishing vessels off the Thevenard slipway.

The council’s general manager operations Grant Drummond said the design of the unloading facility had been finalised and the first contract had been let out, for raising rubble and rock.

He said two other contract packages were out to tender at the moment, for construction of the breakwater and associated sheet piling, as well as major dredging works.

Once completed the facility will enable fishing trawlers in the Great Australian Bight to load and unload their catches and supplies.

The completed wharf-side loading and unloading area would be capable of serving four 30-metre vessels at a time.

Of the project’s $9.6 million cost, $4.8 million has come from the federal government’s National Stronger Regions Fund.

The South Australian government provided $1.5 million with the council funding the rest. Mr Drummond said it had taken many years for the council to get to this point.

“It’s been a very long winded project and we’re excited we’re at the stage we can finally get to building,” he said.

“Council has all approvals required and look forward to delivering the project by December 2018.”

The first lot of works will take place on land between the slipway and the Far West Aboriginal Sporting Complex.

Vegetation will be cleared and a mound will be put up between the worksite and the road, which will be watered down to minimise the risk of dust.

Mr Drummond said the council would hold public meetings in the near future for interested community members to learn what was happening with the project.
