Far West footballers Matt Hillas and Sam Mahar were selected in the Eyre Peninsula under 15 team which competed in the State Youth Championships during the July school holidays.
The Eyre Peninsula team represented the Norwood country zone.
After a great week, the Eyre Peninsula/Norwood team won through to the grand final having finished top of the pile, however lost to Glenelg by a single point in the showpiece match of the country division.
The decider was played at AAMI Stadium, providing a great experience for the young talent on show at the championships.
Just a point separated the two teams at quarter-time, with Norwood enjoying the slender advantage.
Glenelg was able to turn it around in the second quarter with two goals to Norwood’s one and take a five-point lead into the main break.
Norwood recovered in the third term and kicked two goals to Glenelg’s two behinds to swing the match the young Redlegs’ way by seven points.
Glenelg was not to be outdone as it came home with three goals in the final term to win 8.8 (56) to 8.7 (55).
