THE final bowls event of 2016 saw Ceduna men and women bowlers enjoy the finals of the Championship Pairs.

The event was contested together for the first time, ensuring a full rink on finals day, giving the spectators plenty of action to savour.

The women’s final was contested by Lee Chandler and Nancy Bubner against Eileen Fitzgerald and Carol Thomas.

Both pairs had triumphed in exciting semi-finals and had delighted spectators with their excellent draw bowling and accurate conversion bowls.

Chandler and Bubner had defeated Carmen Hoffrichter and Karen Collins 14-9, while Fitzgerald and Thomas also secured a five-shot margin,18-13, over Yvonne Borlase and Melva Freeman.

Fitzgerald and Thomas jumped out to a comfortable lead and were up 9-2 at the halfway mark despite good bowling from their opposition.

Then the tide appeared to be turning as Chandler and Bubner started to close the gap.

By the 17th end Chandler and Bubner needed at least one shot to stay in the game, however Thomas lobbed a bowl right on the jack to make that task very difficult.

On the 13th end they were holding two shots and exerting pressure, but Carol Thomas rose to the challenge and played a superb conversion bowl for three shots.

Eileen Fitzgerald made it even harder by lobbing on another and despite Bubner’s best efforts to dislodge the bowls she was forced to concede the game 7-18, giving Fitzgerald and Thomas their fourth Championship Pairs title.

It was the first time the pair had won with Thomas as the captain.

The Plate final was contested by Angie Freeman and Mandy Nicholls against Heather Workman and Maureen Trowbridge.

Consistent bowling by Workman and Trowbridge put the pressure on their opposition right from the start, however, an excellent conversion bowl by Trowbridge for four shots at the half way mark to extend the lead to 11-1 made the task seem almost insurmountable.

Freeman and Nicholls staged a slight comeback, but needed three on the 11th end to stay in the game.
