It was contested on the picturesque waters of Murat Bay and typical for Ceduna there was no shortage of wind, with sailors encountering mainly southerly winds over the series, which proved challenging for the competitors.

The event was well supported, with good crowds witnessing the sailing action.

The titles were contested by 11 boats from as far as St George and Toronto in New South Wales, plus East Fremantle in Western Australia.

Father and son duo Brett and Cameron Fannon dominated the competition on their skate ‘Tasty Fish’, winning six of seven heats and finishing second in the other heat.

The win is Brett’s third and Cameron’s second, and their second championship triumph as a pairing following on from their previous win two years ago in the championship event at Rockingham in Western Australia.

Former winners David Luck and Damien Vlotman on ‘Any Which Way’ were unable to defend their crown as national champions, having to settle for a runners-up spot.

Michael Winney and Emma Sills on ‘Take it Easy’ were placed third thanks to a strong finish in the final heats of the series.

While the daily races were a centerpiece attraction, the visitors enjoyed many social functions throughout the week at the Sailing Club, as well as a day of lawn bowls action on New Year’s Day at the bowls club and a trip to Streaky Bay to take in the local attractions, which culminated in a very informative tour from Bruce Zippel of Zippel’s Oysters.

The Ceduna Sailing Cub was indebted to a number of local businesses for their support during the hosting of the titles, including the District Council of Ceduna which provided temporary fencing, Ceduna Meat Service, as well as Ceduna Hotel, Ceduna Bowls Club and Zippel’s Oysters for use of facilities for activities during the week.

There were also a number of individuals who helped ensure the smooth progression of the championships, including Kerry and Margie Stott, Graeme Brewster, Kylie Blackham, Chris Stockham, plus Jill Stockham and Marnie Davies.

The 2016/17 event was the fifth time the Ceduna Sailing Club hosted the Skate Nationals and all visitors said they enjoyed their time in Ceduna and hope to return in the future.
