Sea Dragons going to Hong Kong

SEVERAL West Coast dragon boat participants will be competing with the Adelaide Sea Dragons in the eighth Annual International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships in Hong Kong from July 4-8.

Kathy Meier, Di Warmington, Jenny Reid and Judy Gower from the Ceduna branch of the Sea Dragons join Jane Carey from the Streaky Bay branch in competing in the World Championships.

Events will be held in Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, with races taking place over 200, 500 and 2000 metres.

The team depart Adelaide on June 27, arriving in Penang, Malaysia for the International Dragon Boat Festival before heading to Hong Kong.

While Jane Carey has been to the Championships before, for the four Ceduna ladies it will be a first.

Kathy Meier said they are surprised to receive this opportunity.

“We are all overwhelmed, we didn’t think this sport would have provided us with an opportunity such as this,” she said.

The ladies have been doing some extra fitness training to ready them and build their stamina for the event, including training at their gym at the old Show Pavilion.

But they are all excited to be going over to compete in a sport they love to do.

Di Warmington said they together have reached an important goal in competing in the event.

“It’s amazing to think how we started doing this in our local waters and now we will now be travelling overseas to compete,” she said.

“It has always been our goal to compete in an event such as this, and now it’s here.”
