Wudinna women win netball

Matches played on Saturday, June 27 at Kyancutta, Poochera and Wirrulla.

A grade: Wudinna United defeated Central Eyre 48-31.

The game started off at a very quick pace and both teams showed excellent defensive play. Wudinna were able to take advantage of any loose balls.

The second quarter was settled and with some very nice turn overs by Wudinna, gave them the opportunity to extend their lead further.

Both teams had to work hard in the last two quarters. The winter sun, even though good to see, had a fair bite to it. Even though both teams were minus key players, it was an exciting match to watch.

Best players: : Central Eyre Emma Bigg; Wudinna United Alice Little and Cindy Best.

West Coast Hawks defeated Western Districts 43-39.

Both teams started at a very fast pace causing many unforced turnovers. Hawks had the upper hand with more accurate shooting by Goal Shooter Rochelle Wheaton. Once Districts slowed down their goals came a little easier. West Coast Hawks 12 lead Western Districts 9 at quarter time.

Once again Hawks play at the start of the second quarter was very fast and accurate. Some bad passes caused some very easy turnovers enabling Districts to settle and peg them back, Hawks managed to stay in front by 3 at half time.

Districts turned the tables with an excellent start to the third quarter. Tara Brace found the post and shot accurately, helped along by great feeding in to the ring by Sarah Pfennig. Both teams made many unforced errors, with Hawks pace letting them down. Districts steady play saw them with a four goal turnaround – leading 32 to 31 at the break.

A fantastic, hard fought last quarter with all players busting their hearts out for their respective teams. Districts Sarah Pfennig continued her steady play with great passes in to Coby Tomney and Tara Brace and leads down the court. Hawks had the accuracy in the end with some great shots put up by Hawks Rochelle Wheaton and Sharon Joyce. Hawks 43 defeated Districts 39.

Wirrulla lost to Elliston 36-57.

B grade: Wudinna United defeated Central Eyre 55-30.

The game started off with both teams fighting hard for every possession, Wudinna United had a very young team who were running and intercepting anything that came near them. Hannah Boylan in the goal ring for Wudinna United was moving and shooting exceptionally well. The Centrals defences, in Hayley May and Lisa Parsons were trying hard, but with the accurate shooting, there was nothing that they could do.

At half time both teams made changes, strong play from both teams down the court made it a good spectators game. Emma Frischke in centre was running and fighting for every possession that came her way, some silly mistakes in the attack end from Centrals made it hard for them to get back into the game in the third quarter.

The last quarter saw Centrals come out fighting and with some great passages of play down the court and some nice shooting from their goalies, in Maria Bruce and Beth Sampson. However, Wudinna had done the damage and had made it too hard for Centrals to come back. A great game from all the junior girls for Wudinna.

West Coast Hawks defeated Western Districts 74-23.

Hawks got off to a strong start with great drives down the court and great feeding in to the circle. Districts took time to settle with poor passing letting them down. Hawks 18 lead Districts 10 at quarter time.

The second quarter saw Hawks step up the intensity and take out a very strong quarter with the whole team playing well together. Districts lacked drive and determination with again many unforced errors starting to creep into the game. Hawks extended their lead 33 to Districts 14 at half time.

The third quarter saw Districts make positional changes, however the experienced side of the Hawks dominated the game and great defence work limited Districts goalies. Hawks lead 51 to Districts 19.

The final quarter was again dominated by Hawks in every aspect with great team work, passing and accurate shooting and fantastic work down the court. Final score Hawks 74 defeated Districts 23.

Best players: Western Districts: Emma Brands & Danielle Dickson.

Wirrulla lost to Elliston 28-54.

C grade: Wudinna United defeated Central Eyre 45-38.

Play started very fast and scrappy. Wudinna capitalizing on Centrals bad passes. Wudinna’s goalies shooting well from the start. Centrals goalies taking a few shots before they started to score.

Very even play throughout the second quarter. Centrals goalies in Leanna Beattie and Nicole Elliott were starting to shoot very accurately.

An injury half way through the third quarter to Rhianna Foster for Wudinna United saw them make a few changes, this made the Wudinna girls unsettled for a bit, helping the Centrals girls to catch up on the score board. The last quarter saw Centrals playing catchup netball, but Wudinna had done all the hard work early and ran out eventual winners.

Best players: Central Eyre: Wenora Dolphin; Wudinna United: Jo Waters.

West Coast Hawks defeated Western Districts 68-39.

D grade: Central Eyre won on a forfeit to Wudinna United.

West Coast Hawks defeated Western Districts 51-37.

An evenly contested quarter with Hawks Goal Shooter Holly Brougham shooting accurately, supported well by Alex Cronin in Goal Attack, to ensure a lead of five goals at the end of the first quarter.

Hawks added to their lead in the second quarter, they had more play and their goalies maintained accurate shooting to lead by 7 goals. However Tigers did fight back well, taking a little while to settle with new players taking the court. Hawks 29 lead Districts 22 at half time

In the third, Tigers put in a solid quarter, but Hawks maintained accuracy to increase their lead to 8 and tree quarter time.

Hawks drew away in the final quarter winning by a comfortable margin 51 – 37.

15 and under: Central Eyre v Wudinna United.

West Coast Hawks lost to Western Districts 22-52.

Districts settled early with a good turnover by Districts Nicole Brands which was converted to goal, helped set the pace for Districts. Hawks had some wild throws which were easily turned over by Districts and combined with great feeding in to the ring by Districts Abbey Wendland helped Districts off to a strong start. Great tight defence by Districts Emma Brand and Nicole Brands made it hard for Hawks goalies Marni Gilmore and Tahnee Montgomerie. Tight defence down the court by the Tigers resulted in numerous turnovers, converted well by goalies Stacey Lee and Hayley Hutchins, Hawks became more settled late in the quarter with some great moves by goalie Marni Gilmore and good shooting. Again very strong defence by Tigers Nicole Brand and Emma Brands made it very difficult for the Hawks girls, with great backing up on the Defensive ring by Ashley McEvoy. Districts 11 lead Hawks 6.

The second quarter saw strong drives down the court by Stacy Lee for Districts helped along with Lizzie Brands creating more opportunities in the centre were able to be converted in to goals. However Hawks made positional changes and increased the intensity with some hard work put in by Sam Moore for the Hawks. Again great defence by Emma Brand and Nicole Brands make it hard work for the Hawks goalies Alice Haddy and Marni Gilmore to get the ball. Ashley McEvoy again played a good quarter with great defensive work, getting a hand to many passes made by Hawks. Another good intercept by Lizzie Brand for the Tiger helped extend there lead 26 - 7.

In the third, numerous positional changes by Hawks helped early in the third quarter. Districts Stacey Lee set up a great screen in the ring with great feeding in to the circle to Hayley Hutchins by Lizzie Brands. Districts Emma Brands worked very hard in defence together with great vision by Nicole Brands making many turnovers which were converted will by the Districts goalie.

The final quarter saw both sides remain unchanged Hawks Goal Attack Stacey Georgio driving well and creating space in to the goal ring, together with Sam Moore in the centre helped lift the Hawks. Tigers Abbey Wendland made a great intercept which again was converted to goal. Districts whole team worked very well as a team and came out on top with a great win, Hawks never made it easy for Districts, however inaccurate shooting let them down in the end.

13 and under: Central Eyre v Wudinna United.

West Coast Hawks defeated Western Districts 45-19.

Even play down the court with players working wee and goalies accurate under the post. Great defending in the goals by Amber Bawden and Alysha Coombs for Hawks gave them a small 7 -5 lead at the end of the first quarter

All players trying hard but Hawks defending well all game, using there height to advantage well. To take out a convincing win 45 - 19.

Wirrulla lost to Elliston 11-37.

Far West Netball Association

Matches played on Saturday, June 27 at Smoky Bay and Penong.

A grade: Ceduna Blues United lost to Thevenard 48-59.

Ceduna Blues started consistently capitalizing on turnovers created by their defence Sarah Evans and Tracey Baldwin. The centre was dominated by Tracy Bennett with strong drives down the court. They lead by 4 at the first break. During the second quarter Thevenard minimised their mistakes and pegged back two goals on the lead.

The third quarter was dominated by Thevenard’s defence as they locked down the Ceduna Blues United attack. Thevenard’s main defender Lindsay Holness made her presence felt and the Ceduna Blues goal circle was in lock down. This saw a 6 goal turn around and Thevenard were in the lead by 4 going into the final quarter.

This defence strangle continued in the last quarter by both teams however Thevenard were able to use their turnarounds more often with accurate scoring from both their goalies in Jacinta Lycett and junior Courtney Meier. Thevenard created a 7 goal turnaround and ran out winners by 11.

Best players: Tracey Baldwin: Thevenard: Lindsay Holness.

Western United defeated Koonibba 74-42.

Koonibba started the match fired up and got out to an early lead with good play and strong defence. Beautiful shooting from Roma Wombat which continued all match saw them take a 2 goal lead at the first break.

Westies settled in the second quarter and pressure all down the court saw errors begin to creep in for Koonibba, with a 9 goal lead to Westies at half time.

Westies kept up the pressure in the second half with disciplined defence from Holly Turner and Meghan Warmington and strong rebounds by Amanda Hoffrichter. Frustration crept into Koonibba’s game with Westies Tracey Chandler shooting well. Shelley Coleman for Koonibba worked hard all day in the mid court but Westies experience saw them come away with a good win.

Best players: Koonibba: Shelley Coleman, Westies: Tracey Chandler.

B grade: Ceduna Blues United defeated Thevenard Western United 62-52.

They started out hard and fast with an even contest throughout the court. Brilliant shooting by Loreena Sleep saw Ceduna Blues with a 4 goal lead at quarter time. During 2nd quarter Ceduna Blues capitalised on the turnovers and at half time was 7 goals the difference. Ceduna Blues made some changes and took a while to settle. Westies took the opportunity and outscored Ceduna Blues by 3 goals in this quarter. Goal shooters for both teams were extremely accurate but Ceduna Blues ran out winners by 10 goals.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Maddie Smart; Westies: Nyree Trowbridge.

Ceduna Blues 2 defeated Thevenard 58-39.

Both teams came out strong with some great paths of play. Ceduna Blues defence line up made it very hard for Thevenard to penetrate their attacking end. By the first half Ceduna Blues were up by 20. Third quarter saw Thevenard outscore the home team by 5 with some very accurate shooting. Ceduna Blues came out strong in the last quarter to hold their lead and win by 19 goals.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Shelley Williams; Thevenard: Trudy Virgo.

C grade: Ceduna Blues United lost to Thevenard 34-35.

Both team’s went on the court with different combinations to the first 2 times that they met. Emily Zippel & Skye Miller were able to fill in for CBU while Thevy had Haylee Gray playing her first C Grade game & Annette Place was back from injury. There were a lot of interceptions from both defence combinations & the centre court was very tight. The largest difference in the score was – Thevy up by 5 at quarter time, CBU had a strong last quarter but Thevy held on to win by 1 goal. The game was played in good spirit and it will be another good game when these team’s meet again.

Koonibba forfeited to Westies.

D grade: Ceduna Blues United defeated Thevenard 59-24.

Ceduna Blues 1 played Thevenard at Smoky bay in perfect conditions. Ceduna Blues went out strong, picking up all loose balls and shooting well in the first quarter. By half time Ceduna Blues was up by 12. Thevenard had a few changes in the last half, but Ceduna Blues proved to be the stronger team on the day.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Leeanne Holmes.

Ceduna Blues 2 defeated Western United 40-27.

The first half of this game was evenly contested with scores level at half time, defences for Ceduna Blues in the last half made some great turnovers giving them a 10 goal lead at three quarter time, Westies kept up the competition defending and attacking well throughout, a great game played by all.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Rikki Pederson Westies: Kylie Crisp.

Junior A: Ceduna Blues United lost to Thevenard 42-64.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Shelley Hertz, Thevenard: Marni Trowbridge.

Koonibba forfeited to Westies.

Junior B: Ceduna Blues United 1 defeated Thevenard 1 44-8.

Ceduna Blues 1 played Thevenard 1 at Smoky Bay on Saturday. A very good start by Ceduna Blues scoring 16 goals to Thevenard’s 2 in the 1st quarter. The goalie combination of Rhian Miller and Emily Kavanagh were too strong for Thevenard defenders.

At quarter time Thevenard moved Hollie Duncan into goal attack to try and create some opportunities for them in their attacking half. This helped lift their team, with more movement in Thevenard’s goal circle, but unfortunately they only managed to score 2 goals in each quarter as the strong defence work by Ceduna Blues Hannah Stevens and Hayley Holder shut down many scoring opportunities.

Rhianna Nicholls & Kayla Burge tried hard in defence for Thevenard all game, but Ceduna Blues had too many strong combinations all over the court making it difficult for Thevenard. Final score Ceduna Blues 44 – Thevenard 8.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Telene Ettridge; Thevenard: Shelley Fricker.

Western United lost to Koonibba 10-30.

Best players: Koonibba: Cheyanne Shaw, Westies: Ashleigh Wild.

Ceduna Blues 2 defeated Thevenard 2 62-7.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United 2: Chloe Perry; Thevenard: Jasmin Riddle.
