Westies' best go down again

Matches played on Saturday, June 20 at Streaky Bay and Elliston.

A grade: Western Districts defeated Wudinna 36-35.

In what was always going to be a hard, physical game Western Districts started off strong and were first to settle. With great defensive work in the goal ring by western districts Sharyn Feltus and Alison Brands, Wudinna goalies Jade Klante and Benita Tomney had a hard job to keep possession of the ball, with lots of turn over’s which Districts were able to capitalise on taking out the lead at the end of the first quarter. Districts lead 10 to Wudinna 7.

The second quarter saw Wudinna step up the intensity and were able to be more settled in the goal ring, than the first quarter. It was a very even quarter down the court with the goalies from both end really having to work very hard to make every opportunity count. However Districts managed to keep a two goal lead going in to half time. Districts 20 lead Wudinna 18.

The third quarter was again very physical and very tightly contested all the way down the court with every pass. Great defensive work all the way down the court by both teams made it hard work to get the ball into the ring. Wudinna’s Jade Klante and Benita Tomney worked well together in the goal ring, making the most of every opportunity. Great defensive pressure in the circle by Sharyn Feltus and Alison Brands for Districts, kept Wudinna on there toes. Western Districts Goal Attack Tansy O’Brien worked hard and shot well in the third quarter, together with Coby Tomney at Goal Shooter, to maintain there two goal lead at three quarter time, despite the best efforts from Wudinna strong defensive line up of Cindy Best and Emily Petty in the ring. Districts 27 lead Wudinna 25.

Wudinna made changes in the final quarter with Ella Boylan coming in to Goal Keeper. Again the final quarter was hard, physical and possession’s tightly contested, Wudinna’s Jade Klante and Benita Tomney again worked well in goals with great feeding in to the circle by Alice Little. Tight contests down the court again made it hard to get the ball into the circle, a couple of missed opportunities in the ring by Western Districts gave Wudinna a small opening, with Ella Boylan making some great turnovers for Wudinna. The pressure was on to make every opportunity in the ring count with time ticking down, a great intercept by Alice Little gave Wudinna that opportunity to tie the game with only a few minutes to go. The intensity was stepped up by both sides with the score going goal for goal. The spectators started getting vocal and nervous on the edge of their seats. Western Districts Larina Hebberman made a great intercept to give Districts the chance to get in front by one with just seconds to go, together with possession for the next centre pass Western Districts took out a fantastic win to end Wudinna undefeated reign by just one goal. Final score Western Districts 36 defeated Wudinna 35.

West Coast Hawks defeated Wirrulla 42-36.

Tight defence by both teams to start. First goal scored five minutes into the quarter. Wirrulla GS shooting well. Hawks 9, Wirrulla 14. Second quarter the Hawks pegged back their deficit from the first quarter to take the lead at half time. Hawks 21, Wirrulla 19. Third quarter was very fast by both teams. Excellent shooting by Hawks Shannon Joyce, Wirrulla’s Renee Olsen was battling hard in defence. Hawks 32, Wirrulla 30. Last quarter had a scrappy start then the teams settled with tight defence down the court. Hawks fought back and ended up winning by 6 goals.

Elliston defeated Central Eyre 55-35.

The first quarter was good consistant play by both teams. The second quarter saw Elliston play great steady play which enabled them to pull in front. Central Eyre was working hard in defence but could not combat Elliston’s goalies who were shooting well. Play on both sides was good and steady. Elliston capitalizing well with their play. Elliston never let their guard down which made it hard for Central Eyre to make a comeback.

Best players: None provided.

B grade: West Coast Hawks defeated Wirrulla 54-17.

Hawks got off to a great start with goalies being accurate in the wind, tight defence kept the turnovers going and the Hawks kept scoring. In the last quarter the Hawks made changes still not allowing Wirrulla to get on top. Great work Hawks.

Elliston defeated Central Eyre 45-23.

Wudinna defeated Western Districts 44-21.

The start of the quarter saw lots of mis-throws from both team. Wudinna settled quickly and had some good feeding into the ring. Accurate shooting by Hannah Boylan saw Wudinna take an early lead. Good defensive pressure and drive down the court by Wudinna’s GD Tanya DuBois gave Wudinna’s shooters extra opportunities.

Wudinna 13 – Western Districts 5

It was a much more even start in the second with pressure, up and down the court, much tighter by both teams. Bethany Shepperd in centre for Districts worked hard driving through the centre. Rain interrupted the last few minutes making the ball slippery and creates errors for both sides.

A wet court meant slow and steady play with lots of turnovers. Wudinna was more accurate under the post and scores at the end of the quarter – Wudinna lead 31 – Districts 16.

In the last quarter Western Districts mad some positional changes but Wudinna remained too strong. Great moving and accurate shooting by Emma Parsons (GA) saw Wudinna finish with a convincing win.

Final score Wudinna 44 defeated Western Districts 21.

C grade: Elliston defeated Central Eyre 35-27.

Wudinna defeated Western Districts 64-27.

In wet and windy conditions in Minnipa on Saturday the match was set to be slow and steady. Wudinna getting off to a strong start with good feeding into the circle and shooting, Districts settled late in the quarter to come back at the of the first quarter.

Wudinna played well as a team in the second and were strong at both ends making it hard for Districts to get many opportunities in the ring.

In the third quarter Western Districts made changes in the third quarter however it was too little to late, Wudinna were to strong.

The final quarter saw Wudinna extend there lead and take out a convincing win defeating Districts 64 - 27.

Best players: Wudinna: Uana Jericho, Western Districts: Michelle McEvoy.

D grade: Elliston lost to Central Eyre 17-32.

Western Districts defeated Wudinna 43-24.

A slow start from both teams in windy conditions with Western Districts able to steady and adapt to the conditions well leading Wudinna at quarter time 10 – 7.

In the second a few positional changes gave Western Districts a height advantage in their defensive circle, with Nicole Medlen coming in to the game. But Wudinna’s defence also held strong with a few good intercepts by Kiara Sharpe. Western Districts shot well setting themselves up for a 9 goal lead at half time. Districts 22 lead Wudinna 13.

The third quarter saw wet slippery conditions set in which slowed the play making it hard for everyone. Districts Lavina Curtis defended well to help districts extend there lead 33 to Wudinna 19.

The final quarter saw Wudinna’s Kylie Bartley shoot some fantastic goals at the start of the quarter, however districts were too strong and took out a convincing win 43-24.

15 and under: Wudinna defeated Western Districts 39-36.

A fairly even start to the game with a good number of interceptions from both sides. Good shooting from the Wudinna goalies. Wudinna 14 led Western Districts 10 at quarter time.

In the second a few scrambly passages with consistent goal shooting from Wudinna’s Hannah Boylan.

In the third quarter team rotation meant a change of goalies for western districts, but Wudinna were able to maintain there accurate shooting and pressure down the court to increase their lead to 10 at three quarter time.

The last quarter saw Western districts make more changes which helped settle the side, they fought strongly to close to gap, however it was too late in the match and Wudinna too out a good win by three goals.

13 and under: West Coast Hawks defeated Wirrulla 49-6.

Hawks got off to a flying start, Wirrulla didn’t score in the first quarter. Great defence kept the ball down Hawks end for most of the game. Well done to the Hawks girls on a great victory.

Elliston defeated Central Eyre 22-21.

Wudinna defeated Western Districts 49-22.

Very even start by both sides, even play, strong passes through the center made for a good first quarter. Districts defended strongly down the court. Wudinna made great intercepts through the centre with both side capitalising on opportunities in the goal ring. Wudinna 10 lead Districts 6.

Some faster play in the second quarter made it unsettled and scrappy for a while, once play settled down it was very competitive through the centre, with good feeding in to the circle Wudinna were able to capitalise in the goal ring, extending there lead 21-10.

Changes by both sides in the third saw play again take time to settle. Strong passes and strong defence gave Wudinna a larger lead, Districts fought back and provided great competition. Wudinna 31 – districts 16

The final quarter both teams were more consistent, again with strong leads and passes Wudinna were able to settle and capitalise on turnovers, helping them take out a good win 49-22.

Far West Netball Association

Matches played on Saturday, June 20 at Smoky Bay and Thevenard.

A grade: Thevenard defeated Koonibba 56-42.

Thevenard were playing a group of young girls due to the absence of three regulars. Courtney Miller, Zoe Tapps and Rochelle Haseldine had their first taste in seniors. To the girls credit they created turnovers, Thevenard and Koonibba both had to play hard in the first with Thevenard having the edge by two. Jo Hillas was providing plenty of drive through the centre. Thevenard settled in the second and put a distance between the two teams with scores at half time 35-18. In the last half the game was tight but with the help and direction from the senior players continued to hold the lead.

Best players: Thevenard: Elle Threadgold, Koonibba: Roma Wombat.

Ceduna Blues defeated Westies 48-36.

Westies were quick to settle, shaking Ceduna Blues attack with their centre corridor pressure. Westies attack flowed well with Skye Dunn driving hard and feeding well into the ever present Tracey Chandler. Westies lead by 1 at the first break. The second quarter went the same way as Westies confidence grew and they lead by five at half time. A swap by Ceduna Blues opened their attack end and they play flowed much more smoothly for the home team. Tracy Bennett and Chloe Carr steadied their team with impeccable timing and strong leads. An eight goal turn around saw Ceduna Blues up by 3 heading into the final quarter. The final quarter was all Ceduna Blues who ran out victors by 12.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Tracy Bennett, Westies: Tracey Chandler.

B grade: Thevenard defeated Koonibba 46-34.

Perfect weather conditions and a slight breeze. Both teams started off well. First quarter was quite even with Thevenard getting away with a couple of extra goals. The second quarter Koonibba made changes to their side which benefited and lifted their game. Thevenard kept strong Lahn was very strong in GS for Thevenard. Third quarter was very even, Koonibba improved on scoreboard, Thevy very strong defence team. Katie Braendler and Natasha Stott worked well. Both teams finished strong in the last quarter. Thevenard just too good.

Best players: Thevenard: Lahn Mickan, Koonibba: Leitisha Weetra.

Ceduna Blues 2 defeated Westies 50-42.

Both teams started strongly in the ideal conditions. Westies had to work hard in attack with Holly Cushion and Ali Pearce combining well in the defence circle. Ceduna Blues capitalised on their turn over leading by 4 in the first break. Westies came out determined in the second quarter forcing Ceduna Blues to make mistakes in attack. Lee Dunn showed patience in GA and her team settled well to win the quarter by 3. CBU lead by one at half time. Ceduna Blues made a couple of changes at the half time bringing Sonia Oats on into WA. Both reams continued their strong defensive games but CBU had a great quarter going up by five. The final quarter saw some great play by both teams. Nyree Trowbridge continued to drive strongly in attack sending some good passes into Emma Warmington in GS. Ceduna Blues continued to be patient in attack and managed to increase their lead by 2 in that quarter to lead at the final whistle by 8 goals.

C grade: Ceduna Blues defeated Western United 65-39.

Best players: Ceduna Blues United: Donna Cooper, Westies: Danielle Preece.

Koonibba forfeited to Thevenard.

D grade: Ceduna Blues defeated Thevenard 42-17.

On a cold Friday night the game was played in great spirits. Ceduna Blues defences made Thevenard work hard in the goal ring. There were plenty of mistakes made by both teams and both teams managed to pick up from the mistakes made. Great work by the new netballers on the court. A consistently played game for four quarters.

Best players: Thevenard: Wendy Gurney, Ceduna Blues: Tanya Darke.

Ceduna Blues 1 defeated Western United 48-35.

Best players: Ceduna Blues 1: Amanda Michaelany, Westies: Kylie Crisp.

Junior A: Thevenard defeated Koonibba 45-21.

From the throw of the first pass, Thevenard were on top of Koonibba with defences Courtney Meier and Zoe Tapps providing excellent intercepts and support, along with centre Marny Trowbridge driving hard through the court, quarter time saw Thevenard lead 14-5. Subtle changes to both offences proved to be a more effective decision for Thevenard with Rochelle Haseldine showing great accuracy under the ring, Koonibba only conceiting a single goal in the third quarter strong defence from the home team in the final quarter sealed their win at the final whistle, remaining undefeated for the season.

Ceduna Blues defeated Western United 44-33.

Best players: Ceduna Blues: Tegan Drew, Westies: Courtney Stott.

Junior B: Koonibba defeated Thevenard 1 48-10.

Koonibba’s older experienced girls dominated the court, Thevenard girls fought hard throughout the game but Koonibba were too strong. Topping it off with good shooting. A good spectators game with all girls trying hard.

Ceduna Blues 1 defeated Western United 35-20.

Best players: Ceduna Blues 1: Stacey Breede, Westies: Nicole Rohl.
