Ceduna women’s bowls

The opening of the Ceduna and District Bowling Club weekend Non Pennant competition for 2009-2010 was held on Saturday. Sandy Tonkin won the spider game.

Four teams, namely Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars competed.

Numbers for teams are down on last years so the club is looking for more players.

If you would like to join please give your name to Mandy Nicholls 0427 253 962 or Deb Richter 0408 140 919.

You can keep fit, excercise and have fun while socialising.

The bowling club has spare bowls if you require some. Pick up the phone now and enjoy some Saturday sport and fellowship. Everyone is welcome.

Kimba women’s bowls

The Kimba ladies bowls medley day was held on Sunday, October 18, attracting a full crowd, with eight rinks being used to accommodate all the eager bowlers. The day was named in memory of past bowler Margaret Harris. Ladies came from a number of towns, including Port Augusta ETSA, Port Augusta Town Club, Cummins, Kirton Point, Port Lincoln, Wudinna, Cleve and Cowell; along with a number of local Kimba teams.

A perfect spring day, with little breeze and a temperature of 25 degrees was a welcome change from the cool and windy weather of late.

Vice president Di Eatts welcomed all to the event and asked bowlers to take part in a “spider”, with proceeds going to the Cancer Council SA.

With one of the expected teams not showing up, some quick thinking by the match committee had a team of four men (working on the green) promptly changing into their bowls togs. From then on they were known as the “Ladettes” for the remainder of the day. The team consisted of “Carlene” (Carl), “Jacqueline” (Jack), “Gaylene” (Gary) and “Darlene” (Daryl). The ladettes weren’t able to claim any points, with the four teams they played automatically taking the 40 points for the game.

The day consisted of two games of 10 ends in the fours and two games of eight ends in the pairs.

After a day of fun and laughter on the green, and in the clubhouse afterwards, with a little serious bowls in between, the day ended with the Kirton Point team being the only four game winners for the day. The team consisted of Jenny Corston, Jeanette Wiseman, Joan Hannam and Barbara Mullan, with a total of 180 points.

Runners-up with three wins were a Cowell team of Denise Rehn, Shirley Fisher, Judy Wiseman and Bev Stocker.

There were five other three-game winners, with only one point separating each team. In descending order: skippered by Phyllis Forbes (Kimba), Joy Swaffer ( Cleve), Moira Wohling (Kimba), Shirley Inglis (Kimba) and Deb Larwood ( Kimba). This made for a very competitive day.

The major sponsor for the day, Dick Harris, presented the prizes to the winning team. Jenny Corston, the skipper from Kirton Point, responded with a fond memory about Margaret Harris’ participation in bowls.

A gift table of approximately 16 gifts, donated by local lady bowlers, was also raffled. The second raffle of a seafood platter was won by Chris Udy, and the fruit platter was won by ladette “Darlene”.

Di thanked major sponsor Dick Harris, the match committee, catering committee, also thanks to all the ladies who provided the food and worked in any way. Thanks were also extended to the umpire, the “Ladettes” for filling in at the last minute, the greens committee and their helpers.
