Streaky Bay hosted the 65th State Silver Country Golf Meeting last week and succeeded in becoming the first nine-hole course to host this prestigious event.
Usually held on an 18 hole course, Streaky Bay has proved that the town’s accommodation and a first class golf course and facilities were more than expected from the 56 players from 25 clubs throughout the state.
Sue Hedley, the representative from Golf South Australia, was high in her praise of the efficiency of the local golf associates in handling this event.
Commencing on Monday with a “meet and greet cocktail party”, the clubhouse was a picture of class.
The blue carpet and furniture with white tablecloths and silver table runners and serviettes and potted plants was a sight to behold.
Table centres of wine carafes with seashells and goldfish adorned each table and were the handiwork of Maria Prichard.
Streaky Bay president Sue Montgomerie welcomed all present and especially Sue Hedley of Golf SA and introduced esteemed life member Rae Brewster to officially open the golf week.
Eyre Peninsula president Kerry Johnson, secretary Gay Feibig and major sponsors Streaky Bay Hotel-Motel proprietors Penny and Tony Hogan were also present.
Environmentally friendly paper bags painted by the Streaky Bay Area School children and filled with useful goodies was then presented to each golfing competitor.
Catering manager Lorraine Lewis, with the help of the associates, presented hors d’oeuvres fit for a queen, as was all the food over the three playing days.
The course was well manicured and looked splendid thanks to the golf club men, and those who assisted the women on the scrapes, spotting and transporting buggies and players to the various tees.
The weather was perfect for the first day, however wind and rain on the second day slightly marred the morning and the completion of the 36-hole championship.
The 18-hole foursomes were played in perfect weather again on Thursday.
A celebratory three-course dinner was held at the Streaky Bay Hotel and presentation of the championship trophies on Wednesday night by Sue Hedley and Streaky Bay captain Yvette Reed was a highlight.
Helen Flannigan and Liz Carnellor read and acted out the history of the Streaky Bay Golf Club from its inception in 1929, which caused much laughter.
Ninety-five-year-old Mary Williams, 17 times champion of the club, made a short visit and took a standing ovation.

Wednesday 18 handicap winner: Paula White, Blackwood 69. Handicap runner-up (countback) Ceri Nicholson, Port Augusta 60.

Several novelty log drives and nearest the pins were also won.
Presentations after the foursomes on Thursday concluded with a high tea.
Sue Hedley congratulated Streaky Bay associates on the well run tournament and praised the excellence of the hard working captain Yvette Reed and handicap manager Dianne Georgiou.
