Clubs to comment on viability report

25 Oct, 2007 03:24 PM
Football and netball clubs on Eyre Peninsula will be consulted about a report recommending changes to maintain the viability of the sports.

On Sunday representatives from each Eyre Peninsula football league met in Wudinna to discuss recommendations from an independent report conducted about the future of the sports.

Melbourne-based consultant Collins Anderson Management completed the 60-page report about a month ago.

One recommendation states the region should become more professional regarding the governance of football and netball, by establishing an Eyre Peninsula Football Commission.

The commission would include committees for football, netball and junior development and marketing.

Another recommendation stated if mergers of clubs had to occur in the future, a specific model should be adopted.

SANFL director of Eyre Peninsula Football Don McSweeny said the model showed the Mid West league would split into two and join other leagues, the Far West and Eastern Eyre Football League (Central Eyre).

"We asked the question around the table, 'how are your clubs situated in view of the pretty tough times?' and basically the answer was it's a little bit to early to fully assess it yet," Mr McSweeny said.

"But there are some clubs that are going to be struggling to fill teams."

Mr McSweeny said representatives from every Eyre Peninsula football league would soon distribute the report to all clubs within their association.

"They will then discuss various issues in the report," he said.

A meeting with all key stakeholders and the report's author, Daniel Anderson, will be held in Wudinna on Sunday, February 10, 2008.

At the meeting each league will give feedback about opinions of the clubs in their association.

Mr McSweeny said football and netball plays an important part of keeping communities together on Eyre Peninsula.

"It has a role to play in the wellbeing in the community," he said.
