The medal win on Saturday night at the league’s annual presentation in the Ceduna Memorial Hall went some way to easing Western United Football Club’s disappointment at being knocked out of the Grand Final race for the first time in six years.

Warmington’s Mail Medal follows a family tradition.

His father Paul, who now umpires for the league, won the medal for Westies in a three-way tie in 1985 and Warmington’s cousin Todd Warmington also won it for Westies in 2006.

Warmington scored 32 votes, with nine of his 12 rounds as three-point games, to pull away from runner-up, the Blues’ John Dunn on 21, during the count.

Having won the Colts Best and Fairest medal in 2006 and 2007, Warmington went straight into the Westies’ A grade side last season.

He did some of his pre-season work this year in Adelaide with the Port Adelaide Under 18s.

His proud father said Warmington had worked hard to earn the medal this season.

“He’s either training or in the gym four nights a week and every Sunday he does recovery on his own down in the water,” he said.

Warmington, who is completing year 12 at Ceduna Area School, admitted he had made a particular effort to get fit and train hard this year.

“I’m very proud to be up on the wall at the club with people like Milte Chandler,” he said.

Western United president Milton Chandler was one of his football idols, he said.

“I didn’t expect to win, but everyone kept coming up and congratulating me at the dinner so I knew I must have done pretty well.”

In B grade Warren Beattie for the Blues took out the Best and Fairest award with 22 points from Westies’ Sam Shippard on 18.

The Far West Netball Association also presented its Best and Fairest medals on Saturday night.

In A grade Thevenard cleaned up with Lindsay Holness Best and Fairest, Sarah Hodge runner-up and Jacinta Lycett Best Uunder 21.

In B grade Sonia Oats for Ceduna Blues was Best and Fairest with Lee Dunn from Western United runner-up

In C grade Karyn Trowbridge for Thevenard was Best and Fairest with Teresa Thompson, also for Thevenard, and Kylie Blackham for Ceduna Blues equal runners-up.

In D Grade Amanda Michaelanney took Best and Fairest for Ceduna Blues with Andrea Richards, also for Ceduna Blues, runner-up.
