Match played between Eastern Eyre and Le Hunte on Saturday, October 31 at Cleve.
Eastern Eyre 8/305 defeated Le Hunte 10/135.
Eastern Eyre won the toss and batted in the first round of Henderson Shield matches for the season. Jenner and Jaeschke opened for Eastern Eyre with Jenner flaying the bowling of Le Hunte to all parts of the ground. His first 5 scoring shots were fours, followed by a six. Jaeschke was dismissed in the fourth over bringing the in form Lee to the crease. They took the total to 88 in the twelfth over before Jenner was dismissed for a swashbuckling 43. Ramsey and Lee combined for a 171 third wicket partnership which could easily be a record in this form of the game. Ramsey in making 48 played the anchor role, trying to give Lee the strike as much as possible. Lee scored at a rapid rate treating all bowlers with contempt to bring up his hundred with his 20th four. Upon reaching his century Lee continued to belt the bowlers even further with another 4 fours and three impressive sixes before being caught at long off for 147 in the 40th over. Eastern Eyre reshuffled it’s batting line up trying to capitalise on the demoralised Le Hunte bowlers. Le Hunte captain, Gosling with his leg spinners, then picked up two wickets in 2 balls to give Le Hunte a chance at bowling out Eastern Eyre. Donohue on facing the hattrick ball surprised everyone at the ground when he swung wildly, lobbing the ball just over the bowlers head. Digger later ensured everybody that it was a well calculated shot! Stutley came in at number eight and scored a quick 26 to push the Eastern Eyre score further out of Le Hunte’s reach, with the innings finishing on 8 for 305. The Le Hunte bowlers toiled hard but could not contain the onslaught from Eastern Eyre’s top order batsmen. Best was Hedley with 2/28 and Gosling 2/53.
Le Hunte faced and enormous task requiring more than 6 runs an over and facing a fired up Jaeschke opening the bowling after missing out with the bat. He beat the bat numerous times and made scoring very difficult. Brace was the first wicket to fall, bowled by Stutley for 18 which triggered Mullan, eventually dismissed for 43 and May to force the pace. May driving hard was caught and bowled by Johnson in his first over, this was the first of Johnson’s 6 wickets. Johnson tore the heart out of Le Hunte’s middle order, bowling 2 batsmen, having 2 caught at the wicket and trapping 1 LBW. Despite Gosling contributing a well made 39 no other batsmen could get a start against the accurate Johnson and Claxton, with the Le Hunte innings finishing all out for 135. Lee kept exceptionally well taking three catches and Johnson with 6/40 and Claxton with 2/24 ensured a big percentage win for Eastern Eyre.
Match played between Far West and Tumby Bay on Saturday, October 31 at Tumby Bay.
Tumby Bay 8/175 lost to Far West 6/176.
The Eyre Peninsula’s biggest cricket competition in the Henderson Shield began on Saturday. Far West had the long drive to Tumby Bay to take on Tumby on their home turf.
Tumby Bay captain R.Murphy won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on the extremely run friendly oval.
With Far West lacking a bit of firepower in the bowling department compared to previous years, early wickets were needed to not let the Tumby batters get on top.
Big “Axe” Brown provided the perfect start for Far West as he struck in the first over of the innings by getting McInerney to tickle one through to the keeper in Kloeden and Tumby were 1/0.
G.Murphy (27) and Telfer (66) combined for a 38 run settling partnership with Murphy striking the ball particularly well.
A bowling change saw Theodosiou get the wicket of Murphy as he edged one to Kloeden who was standing over the stumps to claim his second catch.
Theodosiou was in the middle of a beautiful spell as he bowled Tumby’s captain in Murphy for 5 when he left one that jagged back to hit off stump and the very next ball Baillie copped a cracker of a delivery which cart wheeled middle stump out of the ground and Tumby were 4/45 in the 17th over with Theodosiou on a hat trick.
Telfer was batting well down the other end despite the carnage going on around him and finally found a partner in Wilkins (13) to hang in with him.
With the score at 4/92 in the 30th over and the time nearing 1:00pm an unusual lunch break was called.
The break was just what the Far West boys needed to re group as the Tumby batters were starting to build a healthy partnership.
The first over after the lunch break went for 12 runs and with Telfer starting to wind up and Wilkins hanging around down the other end the pair had added 59 runs in 15 overs.
A first ball beauty from S.Sutherland bowled Wilkins and Tumby Bay were 5/104 in the 32nd over.
Anesbury (8) and Telfer put on a further 28 runs until W.Sutherland got the valuable wicket of the latter as Kloeden took another catch and Tumby Bay were 6/132.
Brown was brought back into the attack and had immediate success by getting the wicket of Richardson as Kloeden took a brilliant one handed diving catch to make it four for the match.
W.Sutherland was bowling well and got the wicket of Anesbury as he was bowled and the Far West boys were hoping to get the last couple of wickets cheaply and keep Tumby Bay around the 150 mark.
Poole (15n.o) and Allen (25n.o) hung in for the remaining 7 overs and between them the pair compiled 39 runs with some clever batting and running between the wickets and after 50 overs Tumby Bay were 8/175.
Fielding votes went to Kloeden 3, for his 4 catches behind the stumps, D.Johnson 2 and D.Oats 1.
Far West opening bowlers in Brown 2/27 (10 overs) and Johnson 0/35 (9 overs) bowled well with Brown gathering good pace and bounce and snaring the vital early wicket.
Bergmann 0/33 (7 overs) had trouble with the radar early but went on to bowl quite well after switching ends.
Theodosiou 3/30 (10 overs) was the pick of the bowlers for Far West and at one stage had figures of 3/2 off 3 overs.
The Sutherland brothers also bowled well with Steed 1/11 (3 overs) breaking the big partnership of Telfer and Wilkins and Wade 2/30 (9 overs) getting the big wicket of Telfer.
Bennett 0/7 (2 overs) was the only other bowler used for Far West.
Far West knew that the target of 175 was gettable especially with the fast outfield but also knew a good start was required to not let the Tumby bowlers get on top.
Oats (37) and Williams (20) were looking good and pushed the score to 31 off the first 10 overs until Williams took on the fielder in Richardson and was run out going for his fourth run.
The hard hitting Johnson (26) looked in good touch and with Oats the pair put on 60 runs in 11 overs getting the score to 91 when a rush of blood by Johnson saw him hit one straight up and was caught by Richardson off the bowling of Anesbury.
Kloeden (49n.o) was to be the main stay of the Far West innings as Oats was stumped by Telfer off the bowling of Anesbury, Bennett was bowled also by Anesbury and W.Sutherland was caught by R.Murphy off the bowling of G.Murphy and Far West were looking a bit shaky with the game now evenly balanced with the score at 5/114 off of 33 overs.
Theodosiou (23) and Kloeden combined for a 52 run partnership in 11 overs with Theodosiou playing some lusty shots and Kloeden turning the strike over beautifully.
With the score on 166 Theodosiou edged one through to the keeper in Telfer off the bowling of Baillie and Far West were 6 wickets down.
Kloeden then steered Far West past the 175 mark and with Brown being 1 not out the Far West team were home in a good tight match, which swung in each teams favour throughout the day.
Fielding voted for Tumby went to J.Telfer 3, which capped off a good day for him personally, L.Wilkins 2 and T.Richardson 1.
The Tumby Bay opening bowlers in Richardson 0/22 (8 overs) and A.McCarrie 0/15 (4 overs) couldn’t get the early breakthrough although both bowling economically.
Anesbury 3/26 (10 overs) was the pick of the Tumby Bay bowlers claiming 3/8 (including 4 maidens) during the middle stages of his spell.
Allen 0/31 (6 overs) and Poole 0/37 (5 overs) were a little expensive.
G.Murphy 1/35 (9 overs) bowled well until he tore a hamstring and had to leave the field.
The only other bowler used for Tumby was Baillie who took 1/8 off 3.3 overs.
Far West’s next Henderson Shield game is a home game to be played at Thevenard oval against Port Lincoln on the 5th of December.
