Multi-court project well underway in Streaky Bay

19 Feb, 2010 10:06 AM
The Streaky Bay multi-court project is well under way.

The project started with discussions involving three sporting clubs whose courts were in disrepair.

Streaky Bay Tennis Club was successful in their application to the Department of Sport and Recreation for a grant in the amount of $120,000 to re-locate their courts to the Streaky Bay Oval in conjunction with West Coast Hawks Netball Club and Streaky Bay Basketball Club.

Each club has contributed $35,000 to the project.

Streaky Bay Community Hotel kindly donated $15,000 and Streaky Bay Oval improvements committed $10,000.

The new facility will consist of six courts in total, three basketball, three netball and all six tennis.

All courts will be totally under lights.

Organisers are envisioning that this will enable them to attract more carnivals, training sessions and association matches to the district.

Major re-location of power supply and re-routing of water supply had to occur prior to the excavation of the courts.

The project has certainly taken time to come this far, but certainly will be worth waiting for.

The base was completed in late September.

The hot-mix layer was completed in October and then had to sit for weeks before the final two layers could be completed.

Advanced Sporting has been contracted for February to complete these last two layers.

The next layer is a fiber-glass layer to help minimise cracking, and then a final acrylic layer will be applied.

The drainage is complete, the fencing nearly complete and the power trenching is under way.

Light posts, lights and a power supply will then need to be installed, followed by a retaining wall and barricading.

After the acrylic layer is finished basketball poles will need to be installed.

Even though the project has already seen huge commitments from people and businesses there is still a lot of fundraising to do – this is a $350,000 project.

Some of the major costs are: Hot-mix $103,000, fibreglass and acrylic surface $8,300, fencing – supply only $32,000, court furniture $28,000, lighting and electrical $6000.

There are many, many more busy bees needed and lots more fundraising to do – so any ideas and help would be appreciated.

Anyone with ideas or a willingness to commit one or two Sundays to the project can contact any of the committee members: Brett Garnaut, Mark Johnson, Sandra Brice, Penny Williams, Nerissa Baldock, Lisa McEvoy, Jan Wheaton or Annie Picken.

Masquerade Ball

As part of fund-raising efforts for the Streaky Bay multi-courts project, a masquerade ball will be held this Saturday at the Streaky Bay Institute.

The event is due to kick-off at 8pm, and entertainment will be supplied by popular band BC Boys.

Supper will be supplied, there will be an auction on the night and a photo booth.

Masks are available from Sharon Male, Streaky Bay Newsagency, Foodland or The Trading Post.

Tickets are available from Streaky Bay Newsagency or the Trading Post.

All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Streaky Bay multi-courts project.
