The mother of a Ceduna teenager allegedly bashed on Saturday night says she might follow her daughters in leaving the town to avoid violence.
Former Oysterfest ambassador Serena Gunter has left Ceduna after being assaulted on the Ceduna foreshore after her 18th birthday party, and her younger sister Kelly will be studying at Immanuel College in Adelaide next year. The party was also for Serena’s older sister Alana’s 21st.
“When my daughter had her 18th party this group of young people came out from the beach and it was two o’clock in the morning and they should be at home with their parents,” mother Patricia Gunter said.
“These days it’s children controlling parents…
“It’s just like they’re taking over the town. There’s a lot of parents there afraid of letting their kids on the streets.”
Mrs Gunter grew up in Ceduna and Oak Valley and works as a Pitjantjatjara interpreter in court. She says the boys and girls involved in the brawl were not invited to the party and have been involved in bullying her children and their friends before.
“They did everything to her,” Mrs Gunter said.
“What if something happened to a young innocent kid? It would be too late for the community.”
She believes parents need to use more discipline and be responsible.
“I think these kids need help. It needs to go through Families SA, police, council need to do their bit…” she said.
“Are we going to get support from the community or are we going to leave?
“It’s as simple as that. If there’s no support I’m going to leave.
“I’m not going to risk the safety of my kids.”
Ceduna Police said the crime had been reported and they were following up leads but no charges had been laid.
