Four candidates for Flinders ward

23 Dec, 2009 03:00 AM
Two men and two women have nominated to be the next Flinders ward councillor on the District Council of Streaky Bay.

Sherron MacKenzie, Robert Scurrah, Dean Whitford and Gemma Kelsh will compete at a by-election by postal ballot finishing on January 25 next year.

Nominations closed on December 10 and ballots will be posted out from January 5 to January 11 to all electors in the Streaky Bay town area.

Mother-of-six Sherron MacKenzie from Sceale Bay says she “has a strong interest in the community and believe I would bring to the council fresh views and enthusiasm, with no agenda or bias. If elected, I will take the time to listen to all areas of the community and represent you to the best of my ability, ensuring I provide you with honest feedback.”

Robert Scurrah has been a police officer in Streaky Bay for four years and has been manager of the A and B grade West Coast Hawks football teams for the past three years.

He supports the council “improving the change room facilities at the Streaky Bay oval, repairing and improving the jetty swimming enclosure and examining ways to improve rubbish collection. “

Account Dean Whitford has lived in Streaky Bay for 30 years and “believe(s) that one of my main attributes is that I am not aligned with any particular faction of the community and can therefore form an unbiased opinion and strongly support it.”

Gemma Kelsh, who runs an electrical business with her husband in Streaky Bay, promises to “strive to ensure council makes sound decisions that reflect what the community wants and ensures our community is a better place to live, to bring up children and to retire. I aim to improve upon, and preserve what we are already privileged to enjoy”.

The winner’s term will run until the general local government elections in October next year.

Mr Whitford did not supply a photo.
