Despite being small in number, the region’s contribution to South Australia’s economy is significant, something its residents are proud of and that’s exactly why Member for Flinders Liz Penfold is running a competition for a flag that gives the region an identity.

Quirky, fun or serious, it doesn’t matter what theme the flag takes, it just needs to include the coastal outline from the top of the Spencer Gulf to the Western Australian border.

“For some time I have believed that Eyre Peninsula and the West Coast have needed a distinctive flag of our own to identify us wherever we go,” Mrs Penfold said.

“We are so remote from our capital city and have so few people that although we pull our weight in many areas of endeavour we are often not recognised as being from the West Coast and Eyre Peninsula, and are lost in the crowd.”

The flag could fly at sports events outside the region, at demonstrations, be used as a marketing logo for the region’s products, and be worn as a badge or a sticker.

Mrs Penfold has donated $1000 in prize money for the design, with $800 to go to first prize and $200 for a people’s prize.

Entries have to be in colour on A4 sized cloth or paper.

The competition closes on November 27, allowing time for the judges to make their decision and people’s votes to be finalised in time for the winners to be announced on December 11.
