The Liberal Party is standing behind Flinders candidate Peter Treloar who was caught driving at 164 kilometres per hour near Streaky Bay on Thursday.
Streaky Bay Police officer Samuel Frick issued him with a six-month instant loss of licence notice and a traffic infringement notice.
Mr Treloar was detected by mobile radar travelling at 54 kilometres per hour over the speed limit on the Flinders Highway 10km south of Streaky Bay in his Holden Commodore sedan.
He was fined $594 and allowed 24 hours before the ban was enforceable.
When asked about the incident, Mr Treloar was initially reluctant to talk, but called the West Coast Sentinel back a few minutes later.
“To begin with I’d like to say there’s no excuse for driving over the speed limit,” he said.
“I apologise to the community and accept my punishment completely.
“The party accepts that I have made a bad error of judgment and have been penalised by the authorities accordingly.
“I’m a hard working candidate who’s completely committed to the electorate and the party remains committed to my work and candidacy in Flinders.”
Not being able to drive will make it hard for Mr Treloar to campaign in the vast Flinders electorate, which stretches from the WA border to Kimba and Port Lincoln, including the whole West Coast.
Mr Treloar is a farmer at Edillilie near Port Lincoln and was formerly chairman of the South Australian Farmers Federation Grains Council.
