A group of Aboriginal men have been trained as security guards to meet an identified labour need in Ceduna.
Currently, security guards are often brought in from Port Lincoln or Port Augusta for major events, so René Reddingius from the Indigenous Coordination Centre organised a security guard course.
“What we’re thinking to do is fill that service gap and allow our local people to do that. They don’t have enough here – nowhere near – to do that work,” Mr Reddingius said.
The Certificate II in Security ran for five days from December 14 to 18 at the Far West Aboriginal Sports Complex, which Mr Reddingius is also involved with.
He said the enjoyment in the students showed by them staying for the whole time.
“It’s going terrifically. We’ve retained all but two people,” he said.
“They’ve really enjoyed the course and it’s splendid to have that retention rate.”
The men were trained by Al Bradicich from Vice Security and Port Lincoln in subjects such as senior first aid, restraints, laws, baggage screening and handling, radio procedure, and occupational health and safety.
“They’ve been the best I’ve had – really enthusiastic and a strong desire to learn as well,” Mr Bradicich said.
Lunch was catered by Far West Aboriginal Sports Complex ladies.
